Six scenario-based questions covering all four lessons. Read carefully before selecting your answer.

Scenario 1: You are at a clothing store that prohibits personal bags. A shopper arrives with a large backpack. You deliver the Basket/Cart Script. They say: "Fine, I'll just leave then" and head for the exit. What do you do?

Follow them outside and demand they open the bag for inspection.

Let them leave — they chose to exit rather than comply, which is an acceptable outcome.

Call police immediately for theft.

Block the exit to prevent them from leaving with the bag.

Scenario 2: You observe a subject conceal a store item in their waistband. You deliver the Section 35 verbal request. Without a word, the subject reaches into their waistband and hands the item back to you. What is the outcome?

Partial success — you must still detain them for police to process.

The recovery is complete — document the incident and exercise trespass authority to remove the subject if appropriate.

Failure — you should have called police before approaching.

Proceed to citizen's arrest since you caught them in the act.

Scenario 3: A subject exits the store with a concealed $30 item. You are not Use-of-Force certified. Which Priority Call to police is most effective?

"Someone stole something, come quickly."

"Theft in progress, non-violent. Subject is approximately 5'10", black hoodie and grey joggers, exited north on foot toward Main Street."

"A man just stole from us. I didn't get a good look."

Wait until you are sure before calling — you don't want to waste their time.

Scenario 4: During a Section 35 verbal recovery attempt, the subject shoves you backward and runs for the exit. What has legally occurred?

The subject has committed theft — the shove is a separate incident to report later.

Nothing significant — shoving is minor and not a separate criminal concern.

The offence has escalated to Robbery — call 911 immediately and disengage.

You are now authorized to physically restrain the subject in self-defence.

Scenario 5: A client permits reusable shopping bags. You notice a subject with a large cloth bag acting suspiciously — looking around nervously near high-value merchandise. What is the correct action?

Stop them immediately and ask them to switch to a store basket.

Monitor for active concealment behaviors without intervening unless you observe an actual concealment act.

Confront them directly about their suspicious behavior.

Call police to report suspicious behavior immediately.

Scenario 6: A robbery has just occurred and the subject has fled. A colleague says: "Let's go after them — we can get the item back and hold them for police." What do you tell them?

"Good idea — let's go. We can make a citizen's arrest and recover the item."

"Our job is now Safety of Life. Secure the scene, support any injured staff, and cooperate with police. The item is gone — and that is okay."

"Let's broadcast the subject description to nearby stores so they can stop them."

"Let's wait and see if they come back before calling anyone."
